Tasmania, an island south of mainland Australia has similar marine climate conditions to France, Germany, and Poland and is said to be suited for producing superior wine. The long autumn allows for the grapes to mature thoroughly until harvest and the ideal climate enhances the quality. Tasmania has in recent years been recognized as one of the great wine producing regions of the world.
Tasmania’s soil drains very well and is rich in minerals and calcium carbonate. This Calcareous soil with very little toxic pests or viruses affecting the grapes make Tasmania a wine making paradise. Tasmania continues on maintaining a clean and green environment for premium wine making and has not been affected by the Phylloxera, a microscopic insect that feeds on roots of grape vines. Due to these conditions, very old grape vines still exist today, and Tasmania continues to grow outstanding quality wines.
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is definitely the wine of Tasmania
The rare cool climate conditions make Tasmania an ideal for growing superior Pinot Noirs. They have a very ruby-like shiny yet pale red color and an aroma of Raspberries, Strawberries and Cherries. A refreshing acidity with smooth flavour and a note of red berry sweetness. Goes well with simple cooked red meat or stewed white fish.
The Chardonnay on the other hand is a variety produced all over the world, and each characteristic is made by the individual wineries. Tasmania’s Chardonnay has a pale yellow clear appearance with notes of herb, minerals and apple aromas. There is a fresh fruity acid, and a lengthy vanilla essence from the oak barrels. This goes extremely will with Tasmanian salmon.
The highly acclaimed Frogmore Creek wines use only grapes grown in cool southern Tasmania. Slowly ripening grapes are rich in fruit flavors, balanced by natural acidity, and are essential for making the world's top cool climate wines. Add to that the Frogmore Creek's passion for wine making and the approach to sustainable environmental practices makes some seriously “good” wine.
