Near the Arctic at latitude 62degrees and West longitude of 7 degrees very north of Scotland, Faroe Islands consists of 18 islands. They are surrounded by cool pristine waters and breath-taking landscapes beyond our imagination. From the Viking era, Faroe Islands have protected their culture and community for centuries.
With our logistics management, we are able to provide stable supply of fresh salmon from this beautiful, distant and remote location.
Remotely located in pristine waters in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, the Faroese fjords and sounds are perfect for premium aquaculture production, as they provide exceptional biological conditions and excellent circulation of fresh pristine sea water.
The harsh North Atlantic Ocean surges around and through the remote archipelago of the Faroe Islands. These strong currents continuously renew the pristine sea water flowing through the pens and help ensure optimal conditions for the salmon. These currents also help protect the environment around the pens and in the fjords and sounds by effectively cleaning and rejuvenating the production sites.
The North Atlantic drift surrounds the Faroe Islands and mingles with the cool Arctic Currents cascading from the north. This unique current system combined with the remote location of the Faroes Islands, maintains a cool and steady sea temperature around the islands. Research has shown that cool and steady sea temperatures are essential for the overall welfare and thereby also the quality of the salmon.
Drawn to this perfect mix of conditions, wild Atlantic salmon from all over northern Europe make their way north of the Faroes Islands to grow. Because of the small size of the Faroese rivers, there is no historic record of any natural wild salmon population in Faroese rivers for fjords. This of course eliminates any potential negative impact that aquaculture in the Faroese fjords could have on natural wild salmon populations.
Excellent natural conditions for salmon farming, one of the worlds most stringent and comprehensive aquaculture veterinarian legislations and fjords which effectively separate farming areas – all protect salmon from the Faroes Islands from stress and disease. As proof to the good conditions for salmon farming in the Faroe Islands, the Faroes Islands aquaculture industry has the best biological results and salmon from the Faroe Islands does not receive any antibiotics.
Bakkafrost is one of the most vertically integrated salmon farming companies in the world. Full vertical integration means that Bakkafrost has full control and responsibility over all aspects of the production and thereby also the quality of the salmon, from roe to export. Because of this. Bakkafrost offers the industry’s best traceability.
Uniquely, Bakkafrost has its own fish meal and fish oil production. This gives Bakkafrost full control over the quality of its fish feed. Bakkafrost salmon is fed a natural diet rich in marine resources. Bakkafrost salmon is therefore rich in the healthy Omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. EPA and DHA have an array of health benefits. The human body cannot manufacture EPA and DHA fatty acids and therefore they have to be consumed through diet.
The right graph demonstrates that salmon from the Faroe Islands have the lowest biological feed conversion ratio (BFCR) of all major salmon producing countries. The BFCR is a measurement of how many kilos of feed it takes to produce one kilo of salmon. BFCR is, therefore, a good indicator of sustainability.
The right graph demonstrates “smolt yields” for all major salmon producing countries. It show that in recent years the Faroe Islands obtains the most out of each generation of salmon, which both reflects excellent fish welfare and the exceptionally low mortality rate among salmon from the Faroes Islands.
