Saltspring Island, British Columbia, is one of the many jewel-like islands that sparkle in the Strait of Georgia. It was in 1996 when the growing of Saltspring Island Mussels began. Although these clean rich island waters have produced world class shellfish for almost a century, British Columbia has never had a mussel farming industry. Through pioneering hatchery and sustainable farming techniques, we are proud to bring you the first successful farmed mussels from British Colombia. It was Island Seafarm’s goal to grow the world's best mussel while caring passionately about the environment, our employees and island communities where they farm. Their premium quality Mussels are grown in the incredibly rich, cool, clean coastal waters of British Colombia. The abundance and variety of phytoplankton and microalgae in these waters is the primary reason behind their very sweet, unusually plump mussels. They grow pure lines of Med Mussels and PEI Mussels. In addition, they cross or hybridize these mussels to create new varieties. These new varieties have the best attributes of the pure lines while exhibiting a different spawning season. This breakthrough allows them to harvest plumb, sweet, meat-filled mussels all year round.

Island Seafarms own the latest processing and harvesting equipment that allows them to harvest and ice the mussels seconds after leaving the ocean. Mussels remain immersed in ice throughout processing and shipping. Mussels are cleaned, de-bearded and size graded prior to inspection and packaging at one of British Colombia's most advanced, HACCP certified processing plants. Properly handled and continuously immersed in drained fresh-water ice, the mussels should remain fresh for 10-12 days from date of processing.
